Potassium Good For Your Heart
Dear Reader,
It might be a common mineral, abundant in soil and seawater, but potassium is also a critical electrolyte that has some important jobs in the body, helping your heartbeat, day after day, year after year. It's also involved with getting muscles to move, nerves to fire and kidneys to filter blood. For those who have heart rhythm issues, high blood pressure or heart failure, getting enough of this important electrolyte is vital to staying healthy. A diet rich in potassium might also help with high cholesterol too.
The typical American diet provides enough potassium for most people. This nutrient is found in fruits and veggies, dairy products, whole grains, meat and fish. Some of the best sources include potatoes, tomatoes, avocados, bananas, oranges, strawberries, orange juice, raisins, apricots, prunes, dates, spinach, beans and peas. Experts are certain that eating a healthy, balanced diet is really all you need to do.
In the right amounts, potassium is a heart-friendly substance that has been shown to benefit this most vital of organs in a couple of important ways.
- One major study of those with high blood pressure found taking potassium supplements cut systolic (top number) blood pressure by 8 points. But keep in mind that if you have hypertension a diet high in fruits/veggies (excellent natural sources of potassium by the way), fat free or low fat dairy can bring down systolic blood pressure by more than 10 points.
- When it comes to high cholesterol, a direct link between potassium and cholesterol hasn't been proven, but it's of note that many diets shown to lower cholesterol numbers also happen to be high in potassium. High cholesterol puts you at greater risk for dangerous, debilitating heart disease.

Potassium Good For Your Heart Continued...
- In terms of heart rhythm problems, known as arrhythmias, potassium might
be even more important. Every part of the heart muscle needs just the right amount
of potassium to contract in a coordinated way, and this is especially important
for those with rhythm issues. When you have a heart rhythm problem, you are at
risk for uncoordinated heart beats such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter,
ventricular tachycardia or supraventricular tachycardia. It's even more important
for these patients to visit their doctors regularly, comply with treatment plans
and perhaps have regular checks of their potassium levels.
- For patients who have heart failure, getting the right amount of potassium is especially important. Some of the drugs (diuretics) given to treat heart failure can also cause your body to lose potassium. Supplements or a potassium rich diet puts it back naturally, but you should talk with your own doctor before doing anything.
With such a good for you nutrient, is it possible to get too much? While healthy people shouldn't have any trouble from eating a high potassium diet or taking supplements as directed, those with kidney problems, certain other conditions or who are taking particular medications need to take special care.
For those who are determined to have a number, the USDA suggests adults get 4,70 milligrams of potassium daily. The amount of potassium in foods appears on the label or you can research online through the USDA website.
